Testimonials

Sarah L. - Germany Moving my life and freelance design business to Thailand felt risky—until RelocThai stepped in

Their local–expat team found me a beachfront rental in Hua Hin, opened a business bank account, and connected me with an English-speaking accountant for taxes. I’m now billing clients remotely while soaking up sun after work. The transition was so smooth I convinced two friends to follow

David M. - Canada RelocThai turned what could have been a logistical nightmare into a breeze

I’m a 67-year-old retired engineer from Toronto, and within six weeks they had my retirement visa, a modern condo in Chiang Mai, and private health insurance sorted. Even the airport pickup and SIM card were waiting for me. I’ve cut my living costs by nearly 40 %, but the real win is feeling settled from day one

FAQ

Visas & Immigration

Most retirees apply for the Non-Immigrant O (Retirement) Visa or the Non-Immigrant OA (Long Stay) Visa. You must be 50+ years old and meet financial requirements. Relocthai’s professional visa consultants will assist with all the necessary processes.

Either:

  • 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account (held for 2+ months prior to application), OR
  • Monthly income/pension of 65,000 THB, OR
  • A combination of both totaling 800,000 THB/year.

No, working is prohibited on a retirement visa, but it is possible with other types.

Retirement visas are valid for 1 year and can be renewed annually. You also need to report your address to immigration every 90 days

Living & Housing

Foreigners can own condos (up to 49% of the building’s total area). They cannot own land, but can lease it long-term or purchase property through a Thai company or spouse. Relocthai’s team has vast experience with property allocation for foreigners and will take care of all the steps in the process.

Thailand offers a relatively low cost of living. A comfortable retirement can cost $1,200–$2,000/month, depending on lifestyle and location.

Popular expat retirement spots include:

  • Chiang Mai – culture, cool weather, affordability
  • Hua Hin – beach town, quiet, golf
  • Pattaya – active expat scene, nightlife
  • Koh Samui – island lifestyle, beaches
  • Bangkok – urban life, medical facilities

Healthcare & Insurance

Yes. Thailand offers high-quality private healthcare at a fraction of Western costs. Relocthai’s agents will craft the most suitable policy per need.

Yes. For the OA Visa, proof of Thai health insurance is required. Private expat insurance is also recommended for better coverage.

Technically yes, but it’s mainly for Thai citizens. Expats typically use private hospitals or clinics.

Money & Banking

Yes, with a valid visa and sometimes a residency certificate. Retirement visa holders can open savings accounts for deposits and transfers. Relocthai’s connections with leading Thai banks will provide all ranges of financial services.

Most expats use international bank transfers or services to receive pension payments in Thai baht.

Taxes & Legal

As of 2024, foreign income remitted to Thailand in the same year it is earned is taxable. Planning and timing transfers may reduce liability.

Yes, especially if you own assets or property in Thailand. A Thai will ensure proper distribution under Thai law.

Relocation Logistics

Retirees may face import duties. It’s often more cost-effective to buy furniture locally unless it’s personal or valuable items. Relocthai can assist with specific shipping.

Yes. Thailand allows pet importation with proper documentation, vaccines, and sometimes quarantine, depending on the animal and country of origin.

Lifestyle & Culture

In tourist and expat areas, many locals speak some English. Learning basic Thai is very helpful and appreciated.

Thailand is generally safe. Petty crime exists, but violent crime is rare. Healthcare, transport, and services are reliable.

Yes, but you need a Thai driver’s license (obtainable with a valid visa). Many retirees also use motorbikes or taxis.

Absolutely. Most major cities and resort towns have active expat groups offering social events, clubs, and online forums.
